The tail is a modified set of tentacles that seize and constrict prey.
Scale of most individual specimens is at most 21 cm.

Bioluminescence has relevance and is frequent in darker waters.
Colours may change minutely from pink to blue. Alternating chromatism is infrequent and gradual.
Possesses eyes, most indistinct. Those present toward the lateral sections appear to be functional but not essential.
Capable of voluntary motion. Multiple minute cilia are present that allow rapid changes in direction.
Not poisonous.
It is reputedly salty when cooked, but is noted to be sweet to sour depending on environmental factors or ingredients in preparation.
Not often suitable in captivity. Glass aquariums can house a variety of sea life, but those capable of supporting certain species are expensive and rare.
