Trivia
Alike to other piscine species, the horn on the front of the hippocampus is highly toxic.
This can mean death if the barb breaks skin. Antivenom is uncommon.
The teeth of the hippocampus are sharp, but short in length. Tearing flesh appears to be a focus in hunting.
Chromatism can differ depending on the environment. Colour change is slow and may take several days to complete.
Vibrant colours appear to be a norm due to the colouration of surrounding corals.
Reefs and other shallow waters are frequented by hippocampus.
These areas are considered territory by males of the species, and other individuals deemed a threat are often driven out or killed.
There may be a partial symbiotic element to the kelp which grows from the hippocampus on occasion.
These appear to serve as indirect feelers for the surrounding environment.
The hooves are hard and can potentially crack stone. With water however a buffer, this is often only a danger if near the front of a hippocampus.
Individuals are oft aggressive and may attempt to fight anything that nears.
